A 32-page earthquake preparedness pamphlet called: Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country--The Greater Bay Area. This pamphlet has been prepared by the USGS with contributions from numerous earthquake and disaster response authorities: American Red Cross, Asso. of Bay Area Govts., Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, Governor's Office of Emerg. Serv., SF Office of Emerg. Serv. and Homeland Security, CA Geological Survey, Structural Engineers Asso. of Northern California, CA Earthquake Authority, DHS/FEMA, and the Southern California Earthquake Center.
The pamphlet briefly explains why we have earthquakes, how they cause damage (shaking, landslides, liquefaction, etc.), how you can find out about the hazards your neighborhood is exposed to, and what to expect after a big Bay Area quake. However, most of the book is dedicate to earthquake preparedness, explaining the steps individuals can take to prepare their families, homes, workplaces, and communities.
Pamphlet will be translated into both Spanish and Chinese.
Initial release of 1 million copies in mid-September 2005. To be distributed for free through the San Francisco Chronicle, in home improvement stores, and through Red Cross emergency training.
