“Seeking 1906,” a documentary by Kate Schermerhorn, is a fascinating journey back to San Francisco in 1906. Following the compelling story of a major author writing his next book, we go inside the dramatic stories that make up the great and tragic events of the Great Earthquake of 1906. Simon Winchester spent the past year researching and writing his much anticipated sixth best-seller, "A Crack in the Edge of the World: America and the Great Earthquake of 1906."
Simon talks with seismologists and earthquake survivors to piece together the story of the earthquake. Get swept inside this deadly event and the mysteries of the San Andreas Fault as Simon makes his way, by road, sea and air, from one picturesque end of the San Andreas Fault off the coast of Shelter Cove, California, to its end, 740 miles away, in the desert landscape of the Salton Sea.
Visit the most seismically active part of the San Andreas Fault in Parkfield, California, "The Earthquake Capitol of the World". There, Simon meets with the US Geological Survey scientists who are drilling into the fault. Soon after, as Simon begins the writing process, there is a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Parkfield. By coincidence, it happens on Simon's birthday, October 1, 2004. Simon is a writer, world traveler, and an adventurer (see www.simonwinchester.com), whose enthusiasm for both life and his subject matter is infectious. “Seeking 1906” focuses on the science of the event and a purely manmade phenomena: the writing of a best-selling book.
