1906 Earthquake-Related Walks in Golden Gate Nat'l Recreation Area

Golden Gate National Recreation Area

Commemorative walks will be held throughout the Golden Gate National Recreation Area during April 2006 to commemorate the 1906 earthquake. The walks, include:
1906 Earthquake & Fire Walks: Are We There Yet? Army and the Refugees
Join San Francisco City Guides to learn how thousands of soldiers left their barracks during 1906 to help a few hundred city police and firefighters take control during the disaster. Get to know the results-oriented General Funston, and his boss, the more restrained General Greely. This moderate 1.5-mile walk crosses what was the city's largest refugee camp. Walk goes on come rain or shine. For more information, call San Francisco City Guides at (415) 557-4266 or visit www.sfcityguides.org.

Muir Woods Geology Hike
The 1906 earthquake that leveled San Francisco left William Kent’s coast redwoods untouched; yet the political and economic aftershocks that followed nearly spelled doom for this old growth redwood forest. Learn how the ’06 earthquake led to the creation of a park as we explore the geology of Muir Woods and Mount Tam on this moderately strenuous 6-7 mile hike. Reservations required. Please call (415) 388-2596.

Smashing Plates and Elastic Rocks (Marin Headlands)
Discover how the rocks of the Marin Headlands became the epicenter of plate tectonics and contributed to our understanding of our current “shaky” circumstances! This hike will cover about 5 miles of uneven terrain. Suitable for ages 10 and up. Bring water and bag lunch; wear sturdy shoes. Walk will be cancelled if persistent rain occurs. Reservations required. Please call (415) 331-1540.

A Million Years in 2 Miles
