Presentation of Certificate of Honor from Mayor Gavin Newsom to Mayor Tom Bates by Historian Richard Schwartz

Richard Schwartz will read and present a certificate of honor from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom that he procured to thank the citizens of Berkeley for saving the lives of over 15,000 refugees of the Great 1906 Earthquake. Schwartz will also present the City of Berkeley with the proclamation he procured from State Senate President Don Perata to the citizens of Berkeley for the same event. This event gives the citizens of the East Bay an opportunity to participate in a commemoration of the Great 1906 Earthquake.

Relevance
This event recognizes officially for the first time ever the role the Berkeley Relief Committee played in saving so many refugees lives and instigating such a successful relief effort with amazing rapidness and selfsufficiency.
