"Earthquake Days: The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake & Fire in 3-D," is a new, "coffee-table" book by San Francisco historian David Burkhart. The book features rare, 3-D "stereo views" of San Francisco's Great Earthquake and Fire.

April 18, 2006, marks the centennial of the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. Minutes after the quake, photographers were on the scene, documenting California's greatest natural disaster. A few had special 3-D cameras, enabling them to record the events of that fateful April in a particularly vivid and affecting medium. Their "stereo views" of the catastrophe, viewed in 3-D through a "stereoscope," were the way in which many vicariously experienced the quake, from the relative comfort of their own, unshaken parlors.

In "Earthquake Days," the story of 1906 San Francisco is told through rare, original, 3-D images (viewer included), along with firsthand accounts and period lithographs, newspapers, and maps. Most of the stereo views in "Earthquake Days" are presented in 3-D AND as large, 2-D photos. This huge, full-color book includes a 3-D viewer and an illustrated history of this remarkable photographic genre.

"Earthquake Days" has just been named a 2006 Benjamin Franklin Awards finalist, in both the History/Political and Best New Voice-Nonfiction categories.

Published December 2005. Faultline Books (Hardcover; 220 pages; 10.25" x 13" x 1"; 4.6 lbs.). Cost: $44.95 (3D viewer included).

Cost: Free event, unless noted otherwise.
